Following the LRBW and their work with the BSUF, NABS developed their concept of the “student-worker.” This concept pointed to two social realities of most Black Students: they were mostly from the working class and would likely remain in that class, albeit with more skills; and while building their own movement, their greatest strength would come through a student-worker alliance. NABS evolved from a mass student organization into a more disciplined form of what they called a cadre organization by 1972:

With the objectives of consciousness building, NABS developed study groups with the intentions of developing a politically shaped cadre orientation toward anti-imperialist struggle. NABS emphasized study and development of revolutionary principles. While it conducted political education on topics such as the Vietnam Revolutionary Youth Association, Marx, China, Fanon, Cuba, Nkrumah, and Cabral, its leadership grappled with the role(s) that students and youth should play in the general movement.
